ETA: Since I usually get a little more feedback on my vids, I figured I did something wrong with this one. So I've restored the video to fix the ratio issues and changed some of the clip sequences I thought could be improved. I've also got rid of the awful CW tags. Maybe it's a little better now. Hopefully. (I know, I should be vidding for my personal enjoyment and it shouldn't matter if my work is well received or not. But I can't help it. I haven't reached level 42 of wiseness yet. sigh)
Today is July 25, 2010. I don't usually provide notes with my vids since I'm not very good with words! However, there's some little things I did in this vid that I'd like for them to be noticed, in the event that the vid might be watched by someone. Maybe.
Song choice - Black Helicopter by Matthew Good
After I completed my first spn vid and realized how much fun I had with it, I knew I wanted to vid spn again! Thing is, I'm the type of vidder who will get inspired by a song to vid a story, not the other way around. I'm usually not looking for a song to tell a story, it's the song that will dictate what my vid will be about. This vid was no exception - It's the song that inspired the video. For years I wanted to vid either Matthew Good or Our Lady Peace so I've spent a long time listening to their songs on the bus. When I heard Black Helicopter, I thought it would be a great background to Sam's story in season 4. I was especially excited by the following lyrics:
Hey Sammy ain't you hear
Only killers call killing progress
Only killers call killing progress
By 'Sammy' I think Matthew Good meant 'Uncle Sam' and not some random guy called Samuel but sheesh, I'm going to take it!!
Circles and Helices
The vid start with the black helices from Bobby's 'panic room' and it's a recurring image throughout the vid. It was meant to give the vid cohesive visuals and also to represent Sam's decent into dark territory and his focus on vengeance. In addition to the panic room helices, I've also used images of circles to provide a common theme to the vid.
The narrative of the vid is very straightforward and almost chronological. It starts with Sam having to deal with Dean's death and not having been able to keep his promise to save him. Dean's death pushed him into trusting Ruby and using his powers to exorcise demons. I'm also using clips of season 5's Samifer to emphasize that the choices that Sam is making is exactly what is expected of him from the big bad guy. I've also wanted to juxtapose clips of Sam being extremely powerful to him looking miserable in Bobby's panic room. Sam wanted to have power over his life but the more power he was gaining and using, he was less and less in control of his own life. The sequence with Alistair was meant to show this - the juxtaposition of him killing Alistair like he was a fly and then the ones of him looking miserable in the panic room was to demonstrate that irony.
Starting at 1:18, I'm using Dean as a sort of representation of Sam's conscience. Sam knows that what he's doing is wrong but can't stop himself since, at this point, he's addicted to the power and the blood. He's got only one thing in mind and it's killing Lilith.
Fall on me
There're all I see
At this point, he doesn't even know why he's so focused on killing Lillith but he keeps on going because it allows him to exercise more power and to have a reason to continue drinking demon blood. And with that attitude, he's making the Yellow Eyed Demon, Ruby and Lucifer very proud. But in his mind, he thinks he's doing this for Dean's good and the rest of the world.
I got demon blood in me Dean and I'm just trying to take this curse and make something good out of it.
I'm following this line with a clip of Sam throwing some demon in the air and obviously enjoying it very much. He's deluding himself by thinking he's doing this for the greater good. This leads to the big fight with Dean and then all hell breaks loose.
After this, around the 3 minute mark, I thought my story was over. I was thinking of ending the vid there but believed it might be interesting to show the aftermath of Sam's decent into darkness and how he handled it (the damaged relationship with Dean, his continuing addiction to demon blood, Lucifer and the start of the Apocalypse). The vid ends with his redemption, being able to lock Lucifer in his cell and possibly face eternal torment as a consequence. I had to include this shot of Sam in the vid because, to me, it represented Sam taking ownership of his destiny and making his own choices.
The last clip of the vid was of the helices, this time not to represent Sam's decent into darkness but his redemption instead. It also created a sort of bookend to match the first image of the vid.
